Each year, thousands of engineering students from around the world test their techincal skills by designing, constructing, and paddling canoes made from concrete. In North America, hundreds of teams compete against each other in localized competitions to determine the best of the best. Ultimately, the top teams from each region (including teams from Canada and Mexico) travel to the National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) in hopes of receiving the national title. For the first time in 2007, the first place team at the NCCC was invited to the world finals in the Netherlands for a chance to compete against teams from all over Europe, Asia, and Africa. Teams are judged in four catergories in competition, including: Technical Design Paper, Oral Presentation, Final Product, and Paddling. Each component is worth 25% of the team's overall score, and the team with the highest overall score wins the competition. The winning team at a regional competition receives an inviatition to the NCCC. The top three teams at the national competition win $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 scholarships for first, second, and third place, respectively (in addition to bragging rights). Here, we have posted information about Nevada's most recent experiences at the local Mid Pacific Conference (featuring colleges from Northern Nevada and Northern California) and about the National Concrete Canoe Competition. In addition, you will find photos, competition results, and links to other sites with more information about each of the competitions.
