The 2009 Nevada Concrete Canoe Team:
Mitch Brown Project Manager Hometown: Reno, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Senior Nickname: Mitchie B. This is Mitch's first official year on the Nevada Concrete Canoe Team. He helped with construction in 2008, and took on the role of Project Manager in 2009. If Mitch had free time from the canoe project, you would most likely find him discusing philosphy, politics, or finance with his friends. Mitch holds the fastest team record for running backwards around the Sparks Marina during canoe practice. Mitch is a great asset to the team, and we're glad he's leading Nevada in 2009.
Andrew Durham Construction; Paddling Hometown: Syracuse, NY Major: Mechanical Engineering Year: Senior Nickname: None Whatsoever Andrew is the 2009 Construction Chair and a veteran paddler. He joined the team in 2008 and helped lead the team to victory in final product and paddling. Andrew takes an interest in cars, motorcycles, skateboarding, and playing music. It's great that all of his hobbies can be completed between class, paddling practice, the gym, and construction time in the lab basement!
Mix Design Hometown: Reno, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Snap, T.R. Tiffany is our current Mix Design Engineer. She joined the team in 2007, and got involved in concrete mix design. This year, she is the owner of our patented mix design spreadsheet, which has been under construction for four years now. She is also one of the "Kellog's Trio" (Snap, Crackle and Pop), our first freshmen canoe team members. Tiffany is our shortest team member and she wishes she had enough free time to visit Germany.
Katie Bowden Mix Design; Paddler Hometown: Reno, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Crackle, Katiebowden Katie went to her first competition as a freshman in 2007 and has been involved with canoe ever since. She is one of our mix design engineers and she is the only returning female paddler. Katie is our little ray of sunshine and is always fun to be around. In her spare time, she plays soccer and opens twist-off beer bottles for M*rk.
Construction, Paddling Hometown: Reno, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Pop, Marcus Aurelius Mark is a veteran paddler and a member of the construction team. He joined the canoe team as a freshman in 2007 as well. Mark gets the award for eating the most food in a single day (we're talking bacon, eggs, toast, cereal, and five sandwiches by 3pm). He enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, going to the gym, and taking his shirt off.
Paddling Coach Hometown: Littleton, CO Major: Civil Engineering Year: Senior Nickname: Dub, Trunks Jeff joined the team as a paddler in 2008, and he is our current paddling coach. He is coordinating two practices per week and he transports the canoes to and from the Sparks Marina. He enjoys frisbee, hiking, camping, and soccer. He also like writing novels in his spare time. The following is an excerpt from his latest manuscript , Not My Life: "Once, when I went on a camping trip with my Boy Scout Troop, I became seperated from my patrol on a routine 5 mile hike. Unable to find my way back, I decided to find a suitable shelter to pass the night before darkness fell. As I was preparing my makeshift bed, a hungry pack of attack bears surrounded me. I don't remember what happened next, but when I woke up the next morning, I was covered with bear blood and entrails. I skinned the largest of the brutes, fashioned a coat and began to search for camp."
ASCE President; Paddler Hometown: Las Vegas Major: Civil Engineering Year: Senior Nickname: George Jorge has been on the border of joining the canoe team for two years now. He helped with construction the past, but this is his first year as an official team member. It is tradition for the ASCE Student Chapter President to paddle on the concrete canoe team, and Jorge did not let us down this year. Jorge was born in San Luis Potosi, MX, and he enjoys snowboarding, raquetball, soccer, and volleyball in his free time.
Paddler, Mix Design Hometown: Minden, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: K-tizzle Katie Number Two joined the team this year as a paddler. In her spare time, she enjoys playing basketball, golf, and tennis. Katie is a great addition to the team because she brings cookies to paddling practice every week. Not to mention, she knows Batman! We always enjoy Katie's company and are glad to have her on the team this year.
Paddler Hometown: Reno, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Kim Possible Kim just joined the team, and she will be paddling the canoe in 2009. She enjoys the outdoors, playing volleyball, and listening to music. She is a great addition to the team because she once made a mean banana cream pie that rivaled Katie Ezell's cookies. Although she doesn't know any superheroes, she does have a half-brown eye. That's got to count for something.
Angeli Gamez Paddler Hometown: Laguna, Philippines Major: Civil Engineering Year: Sophmore Nickname: Leli This is Angeli's first year as a paddler on the canoe team. Although she's small, she is a powerful paddler. Angeli likes to play tennis and basketball in her spare time. FACT: She owns two chihuahuas and has a secret obsession with fat little pigs.
Graphic Design Hometown: Las Vegas, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Jazz Jose joined the team last year, and he brings his excellent graphic design skills to the table. He helps the construction team when needed, and he will develop the stain design on this year's canoe.
Construction Hometown: Sparks,NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Sophmore Nickname: Kune Dog Justin joined the team as a freshman and he helped with construction in 2008. In his free time, he likes to golf, run, listen to music, and watch the Vikings. He loves to laugh, and he is a great addition to the team.
Mix Design Hometown: Orange County, CA Major: Civil Engineering Year: Junior Nickname: Mai Tai This is Tenaya 's first year on the concrete canoe team, and she planning on helping with the mix design and the display table. She enjoys swimming, running, backpacking, and snowboarding. She also really enjoys math (she must if she's minoring in it). FACT: Tenaya holds the team record for most piercings (she has 11).
Mix Design Hometown: Sparks, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Sophmore Nickname: Kev Kevin started with the canoe team this year, and he has been involved with concrete mix design. In his free time, he likes to play tennis and basketball. One thing to note is that Kevin is a twin, so things can be a little confusing. If the kid sitting next to you in the cafeteria doesn't seem to know anything about the density of this week's mix design, chances are that kid is not Kevin.
Mix Design Hometown: Las Vegas, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Sophmore Nickname: Tree, Stretch This is Austin's first year on the canoe team and he is involved with the concrete mix design. He enjoys mountain biking, camping, snowboarding, and volleyball. He is our most random team member, and he is the only one who got away with devil horns in his team photo.
Water Boy Hometown: Sparks, NV Major: Civil Engineering Year: Sophmore Nickname: Hoofty Ray joined the canoe team this year, and we already know that he is a good find. He is allergic to losing, so his health is inscentive to do well in this year's competition. He enjoys urban running, listening to music, and intramural sports. Although his waist is half the size of Jeff Weagel's calf, he can smash a toaster like a champ. |
